About the archive

Mostly AI, fully Rex

Beck Rex is a fan-made index of recommendations from Ed Gamble and Matthew Crosby’s Radio X podcast: Beckenham Recommendations, unearthed from transcripts and presented in chronological order.

What is this?

On Ed Gamble & Matthew Crosby on Radio X, the hosts often end episodes with Bec Recs: Beckenham Recommendations. This site gathers those films, TV shows, albums, podcasts, books, food, places, games and other tips into one browsable archive.

The name is deliberately over-interpreted: Beck as Beckenham, Beck as alternative-rock scrapbook, Beck’s as glossy green-and-red beer label; Rex as king, tyrannosaur, and noisy little recommendation monster.

The Rex part was not interpreted conservatively.

How it was created

  1. Downloaded the podcast feed and transcribed episodes locally.
  2. Rendered the transcripts into LLM-friendly Markdown.
  3. Used scripts to find likely Bec Recs sections near the end of episodes.
  4. Used OpenAI models to extract candidate recommendations, preserve context, correct obvious transcription mistakes, and mark doubtful items for manual checking.
  5. Generated this static website from the verified JSON data.

In other words: the pipeline was mostly AI, with human direction, scripting, sanity checks and domain ownership around it. The data is useful, but not sacred. Items marked manual check still deserve a human look before being treated as canonical.
